This is NOT a Photo Manipulation! Just because dA is filled with them, doesn't mean this has to be one as well. It's a photograph, the most editing that was done is on the eyes and that does not constitute a Photo Manipulation. She is really blue! It's called body paint and it takes HOURS!

Creative Team

Body Painting by Pamela Grieco
Hair by Ebony
Model is Raven West
Production Design is Shayla of Phantom Light Media (*TheRoseCourt on dA)

The body painting took probably around 5 hours!

Outfit was done by me and Shayla, I provided the jewelry.
Post processing by me. Shayla gets credit for finding all the people who helped make this possible!

I'm not sure if this is necessarily the right category to submit to... but I don't know what else to put it in.
The first of the series... editing is kinda a bitch and I'm OCD. It's hard to get the right "glow" that the movie had. But I think this is decent. :giggle:

Something important to me, is to always try and maintain realism with my photos, that's why the paint is real, the model is real, the setting is real. The only element here that's obviously been changed is the eye color/size.

I just want to say something. I realize not everyone likes Avatar and you could even say the Avatar "craze" has put people off of liking the movie. But I have something to say and that is, I believe any true artist should be able to at least appreciate the visual beauty that this movie has shown us. So please, if you don't care for Avatar that's fine, but simply don't look and keep your comments to yourself. I did this photo shoot for me because I am a fan of the movie.

Avatar fans, I hope you enjoy. :)

I saw the picture of her in the wallgreens with the babyoil. I laughed so hard. I have been painted with that stuff befor and it sucks getting it on/off.

You did a wonderful job on the paint. What is her natural skin color? The little white dots are the best. I do understand why everyone comments on the eyes because they are what draw you in to the picture. But what alot of people are doing is they are not looking away from the eyes.

wonderful job and I would love to see more.

This is lovely! I am happy to see this because there IS so much photomanipulation to get the end result. This is probably one of my favorites Avatar fanarts because of that fact, actually.

Wow truly amazing, I am a huge fan of bodypainting, it's an art unto itself. I've not seen the movie this style comes from but I can certainly appreciate the work that was put into this.

I’m not sure why people care if something is popular or not. I hear it a lot. ‘ohohoh…everbody loves it so I have ot as well!’ or the opposite ‘oyoy… everyone loves it so I’mma gonna hate it!’

I personally don’t care if people love or hate something, I watch or read it and judge for myself. I LOVED Avatar. Can not stand Twilight. Actually liked Harry Potter despite thinking I’d not like it. Could not STAND American Beauty despite everyone telling me I would. Actually loved Mystery Men.

I like quirk? Hmm. Either way, I like what I see here. :) I’m not one for good critical advice. I either like stuff or I don’t. I can never always say why. Ah well. And being body paint, that had to take forever man.

Nobody has to like something just because a lot of other people do. I make up my own mind about that as well. We all should. I just wanted to make sure people weren't going to leave nasty comments because they're anti-Avatar.

Thank you for your comment.

I don't get why people say this should be in "Photomanipulation" category, a lot of photos are much more edited than this one and people don't disturb...

So, I just want to say you.. GREAT WORK!

I know right? There's a ton of photo manipulations that are actually misplaced and put in the photography genre but I don't see people commenting about it. It's really bizarre. Thank you so much for your comment! :)

Barely any, just the eyes, we didn't want the model to wear yellow contacts.
That would be just cruel, but the body painting alone took about 6 hours.

I'm getting irritated that all people are commenting on is the eyes and the editing... see there's so much photo manipulation on this site for Avatar, that I think people don't believe she's really blue...

So much went into this, I think they're clueless.

how much post production did you do cause if you did alot then it should go in Digital Art > Photo Manipulation > Fantasy

The only thing I did editing on was the eyes, the rest was basic post production (levels, contrast, sharpening, etc). Photo Manipulation counts as an image composed of more than one image. Therefore this is not photo manipulation in the slightest.

oh ive always assumed that a photo manipulation was 1 or more images cause if you take 1 image and edit it your manipulating it but in any case its a lovely photo :aww:

:iconporcelainpoet:
PorcelainPoet Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2010
Well it depends on what kind of editing it is. If I placed a texture overlay over this image,
it can still be submitted to the Darkroom category, which is still under Photography.
I just know the specifics cause I've been looking through the gallery genres for the past year
as a GM. :giggle: Multiple images added and mixed with each other to make a new image is Photomanipulation
by dA's standards. However say, adding in a false background behind your subject in a photo is also
manipulation. But changing eye color or size is just editing because you're not adding anything that wasn't
in the original photo, you're just changing elements of it.
I know it's confusing and a lot of people might not agree, but that's the basic lines that have been drawn
and are used by most people. But thank you for the comment, I'm glad you like it. ;)
I'm not trying to argue or anything.. just elaborating lol.

I think that in the Avatar movie, they had much larger eyes and their pupils were larger than a human's in proportion to the total eye size.
Reply
:iconporcelainpoet:
PorcelainPoet Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2010
If you have nothing to do but talk about the difference in eye size, please don't bother commenting... this wasn't supposed to be exact. Seeing as the model is the size of a regular human, there wasn't a way for me to make her eyes as large as the Na'vi eyes without it looking stupid.

Instead of getting immediately defensive, you can take what was supposed to be constructive criticism and run with it.

Plus, within about 15 seconds of searching, I found another artist online who did just that - made someone's eyes larger for a real life Na'vi photograph. His model - oddly enough - was the size of a "regular human" as well, which is to be expected...since she's a human.

He even did a tutorial. It doesn't look stupid.

Perhaps the artist prefers to keep her work as is instead of succumbing to the photoshop addiction that plagues today's art world. That way, what you see is real instead of finding out "oh they just used a computer". So, when you do something that takes this long and doesn't require photoshop, let us know and we'll come and give you our two cents.

The comment wasn't made lightly, so I find you calling it "my two cents" a little trite.

It was neither meant to be negative or positve, a critique nor a praise. It was a fact - there is a difference between the movie Na'vi and the homage pictured here. If you added any tone or inflection to that - whether negative or positive - that is your own doing, not mine.

I agree with clokverkorange. This artist seems easily offended. If you glance at the artist's initial comments on any photo in this series, it's clear that PorcelainPoet was already upset with some responses from the dA community regarding Avatar stuff. The artist is most likely very young. There was nothing wrong with your comment.

But that's all you had to say about it.
The reason I am getting defensive at all
is because of how much time went into this
photo shoot.

Was there anything positive you had to say about it?
